Continuing to go back through the old photo archive, it's time to talk about another popular
figure set from Japan.
Blog #211 explodes with the Character Product Great Nita DX Figure set.
Great Nita was released in 2000 by Character Product in conjunction with Toukon Shop's
(Charapro's New Japan merchandise portion) "Cyber" Great Muta figure.
Nita's appearance was modelled after the infamous "No Rope Current Blast Deathmatch"
against The Great Muta on August 28th, 1999 in Tokyo's Jingu Stadium. A match that
saw The Great Muta step into the explosive, hardcore Wrestling style made famous by
rival promotion FMW.
As you may have guessed, Great Nita is the alter ego of Japanese hardcore legend Atsushi
Onita. The Nita gimmick itself is a parody of the Great Muta; right down to the removable
ninja hood.
I believe the the Japanese Kanji on the back of Nita's top reads "邪道" (Evil Ways); which
is both a slogan and the merchandising company for Atsushi Onita. The same writing can
be found on the back of Atsushi Onita's leather jackets in gold font.
Since The Great Muta has "Great Muta" written in Japanese Kanji on Muta's ring pants,
Nita's ring pants contain their own kanji which reads: "愚礼吐似多" (which translates
to "Foolish Vomiting").
Great Nita unmasked!
The single-packed Great Nita figure is a sought after collector's item due to the large number
of accessories included with the figure.
Never before has a Toukon Shop or Character Product figure (unless you count the Tiger Hattori
referee figure that came bundled with the NJPW ring playset) came packaged with so many
accessories.
Included is the single-packed Great Nita deluxe figure are the following accessories:
* Barbed wire ring ropes (for use with the NJPW ring playset)
* Great Nita entrance hood
* Folding chair (frame)
* Folding chair (seat)
* Pyro
* Diecast scythe weapon
Placing the fire accessory between the Nita's figure's teeth allows you to recreate Nita's
signature pyro attack!
A packaged example. The bottom left corner mentions that the included accessories are also
compatible with Toukon Shop's ring playset and Character Product's Atsushi Onita figure.
The back of the packaging shows the NJPW ring playset complete with the barbed wire
ring ropes included in the Great Nita deluxe set. Nita's hood accessory is also shown.
In case you wanted to recreate Onita's memorable entrance against Masahiro Chono, the
folded chair accessory is only available in the Great Nita deluxe set. Talk about clever
marketing!
Onita complete with chair would be made available in minifigure format as part of Character
Product's ninth volume of Mini Big Heads line from 2007.
Closing thoughts:
By the early 2000's, Toukon Shop/Character Product were beginning to add ring accessories
with a number of different figures. The Deluxe Satoshi Kojima figure set from 2001 for example, contained a ring bell and mallet. If you wanted to add the New Japan referee Tiger Hattori to your
collection, you would have needed to purchase the NJPW ring playset.
Likewise, announcer Hidekazu Tanak was came bundled with the second generation IWGP belt
while the deluxe Kazuyuki Fujita figure included both the first and second generation IWGP
belt makes a year later.
While the DX Great Nita figure set is an awesome collector's item, I've found the more valued
variation is the Great Muta vs Great Nita two-pack.
From my view, there's no cosmetic differences between the two-pack and single packed Nita
figures.
Interesting enough, the two pack does not include Great Nita's barbed wire, pyro or folded chair
accessories; yet, the presence of a deluxe Muta figure tends to drive the price and demand for
this figure set up dramatically.
